The Year of the Rooster starts next weekend with the new lunar year. If you’re looking for where you want to celebrate Chinese New Year in San Antonio, we have you covered. With cultural festivals and events, you can have a great Chinese New Year in 2017.

Chinese Society of San Antonio

What: Ring in the Year of the Rooster with style and class with the Chinese Society of San Antonio. There will be a sit-down dinner and entertainment all night long. Some of the performances will include folk songs and dancing, Tai Chi, martial arts, traditional Chinese music and games. As part of the gala, there will be ballroom dancing, family portraits, and door prizes. This is a formal event, so be sure to dress the part in a coat and tie for men and cocktail dress or Chinese dress for women.

Institute of Texan Cultures

When: February 4th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What: This San Antonio Chinese New Year celebration has extended to include all Asian cultures. The festival will have crafts, fashion, cultural performances, and plenty of delicious food. Fifteen vendors will be in attendance with Asian-American food, including Japanese, Thai, Filipino, Laotian, and Korean. In addition, there will be three stages with traditional Asian dance and music performances, cooking demonstrations, henna tattoos, and palm readings.

What: You can find an interesting variety of traditional and innovative Asian food at this San Antonio restaurant.  Try the lemon pepper curry wings, duck fat fried rice, phat se ew, tikka masala tacos, and the Hot Joy rice bowl. You are sure to experience a lot of flavor as you enjoy celebrating the new year in a relaxed environment.

University of Incarnate World

What: Participate in a mix of traditional and modern culture with the Chinese New Year Lantern Festival presented by the Alamo Asian American Chamber of Commerce. At this festival you can see performances including throat singing, acrobatics, horsehead instrumental music, and, of course, the lighting of the lanterns. There’s no way you will be bored with everything happening around you.

Sur la Table

What: Take your significant other on a unique Chinese New Year date with a cooking class at Sur la Table. An instructor will walk you through cooking a traditional Chinese New Year dinner, including pork and ginger dumplings, noodles with baby bok choy, Sichuan shrimp, and Chinese long beans with chile and garlic. You’ll learn how to fill, fold, and steam the dumplings as well as the secret to making delicious Chinese seasonings and sauces. After this class you’ll feel confident making it at home for all your loved ones next Chinese New Year.
